Billabong Swimwear
Billabong is a surf culture inspired clothing company founded in
1973 by Gordon and Rena Merchant. The couple decided to create
several men’s board short patterns and see how well they were
received. They cut out the patterns themselves, sewed them by hand
and then visited local surf shops on the East Coast of Australia to
offer their durable line of shorts. What infamously became
labeled as the first pair of Billabong boardshorts quickly led to a
massive line of sturdy and stylish surfing apparel that in the
first 20 years reported earnings of well over $110 million in
sales. While sales soared, Billabong decided to extend the popular
surf wear clothing and accessories line to include a variety of
extreme sports and their participants. Billabong sponsors the
leading athletes, both men and women, in extreme sports to promote
their brand.
Billabong is also known for its philanthropic efforts and Earth
conscious production and packaging. To this day Billabong
proudly displays the same original logo that is one of the most
recognizable logos in surfing. The logo is represented as a static
wave in reference to the oasis that is Australia. In the mid
1990’s Billabong entered the quickly growing market of surf
clothing for women. Billabong board shorts for girls, dresses for
girls, and even swimsuits for juniors became popular almost
immediately. The cool styles cut specifically for women, quickly
gained popularity and became a top competitor for Roxy
(Quiksilver), who is notorious for populating the female surf
fashion market. Billabong is recognized and desired
worldwide. Billabong designs and products are affordable and
most importantly durable.
