Opening Ceremony Shoes
2002 saw the birth of a brand which would revolutionize casual
wear. Founded by Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, Opening Ceremony,
known as OC for short, started as a department store in-house brand
but soon branched out to become a name in the fashion world. The
founders describe their line as “basics plus,” which is
an apt description of the eclectic mix of style, colors and designs
that go into each garment. Inspiration for the label came from the
fashions that Carol and Humberto observed on the streets of Hong
Kong.
The line boasts a wide range of clothing, from dresses and skirts
for women to casual wear for men. Each item is a reflection of the
brand’s commitment to producing designs that are trendy yet
easy to wear. Footwear is perhaps the brand’s best-known
creation, with boots and wedge boots at the top of the list; these
are “staple” accessories for modern streetwear.
Although the colors used by OC tend to be monochromatic across
collections, there is no mistaking the edgy sense of adventure and
freedom evoked by the designs.
Today, the label has stores in Tokyo, New York and Los Angeles, all
cities where streetwear is part of the local urban culture. By
being cognizant of trends and delivering comfortable, modern
designs that appeal to streetwise and suburban types alike, Opening
Ceremony will doubtless be around for a long time.
