Jean Paul Gaultier
The playful, unusual and versatile designs of Jean Paul Gaultier
have made him a prominent figure in the fashion and entertainment
worlds. Although he did not have any formal training in
fashion design, Gaultier, born in France in 1952, caught Pierre
Cardin’s attention with his early efforts. Gaultier worked
for Cardin for four years.
In 1976, Jean Paul Gaultier’s solo career took off
astronomically. His popularity is based on his unique and
unconventional pop-culture-inspired designs. Over the years,
his Haute Couture collections have been called unusual, remarkably
formal and unforgettable.
Jean Paul Gaultier’s line of shoes for women is made up of
styles that are fashionable, feminine, funky, and most of all,
wearable. Along with his clothing and footwear lines, Jean
Paul Gaultier’s line of accessories, including sunglasses and
handbags, is also in demand.
Like many designer houses, Jean Paul Gaultier even has a fragrance
line in his name. His Le Mâle line of perfumes,
including the eau de cologne version of his Fleur du Mâle,
are the most marketable of his fragrances. Jean Paul Gaultier
also has a line of women’s fragrances, the latest of which is
“Madame.”
Gaultier has dressed Hollywood starlets and international beauties
alike; he was the favorite couturier of the late Leslie Cheung (of
Hong Kong’s silver screen). Jean Paul Gaultier still designs
clothing for his own company, and he has recently collaborated with
Hermès for its clothing line.
