Derek Lam
American fashion designer Derek Lam was born into a Chinese
American home in San Francisco, California. As a part of a large
family of seamstresses and tailors, Lam acquired a love for great
fashion at a very early age. Derek Lam decided to attend a fashion
school of the arts, Parsons School of Design, and graduated in
1990. Derek went on to work in a retail store called Michael Kors.
After several years, Lam decided to move to Hong Kong to work for a
larger retail brand.
In 2003, Lam launched his own clothing line which was featured at
New York Fashion Week in fall 2003. It is there that Derk Lam won
Perry Ellis' new designer award, and from there, his clothing line
sky-rocketed. One of Derek Lam's most popular signature pieces is a
raw silk sheath dress with the plunging neckline. Lam also set the
trend for wide-leg trouser pants, which are still popular in
today's fashion industry. The label touches on a femininity that is
mature and classy with a sexy twist with handbags, sunglasses,
shoes and, of course, fabulous clothing.
