Elie Tahari
Elie Tahari is a clothing company established by designer Elie
Tahari. He opened his first boutique on Madison Avenue in 1974, and
since then, the company has grown to thousands of boutiques in 40
countries. The upbeat, understated, sophisticated style of Elie
Tahari appeals to customers around the globe.
Elie Tahari immigrated to the U.S. in 1971 and dove into the
Manhattan fashion arena, learning all he could while working at a
Greenwich Village boutique (and sleeping at the YMCA or on park
benches at times). He started designing women’s clothes
inspired by the local nightclub lifestyle, and his designs quickly
became popular. In the early 1980s, Tahari predicted that the
decade’s fashion climate would feature tailored suits,
jackets and blazers, and he rose to the challenge. Elie Tahari
blazers and jackets remain his bestsellers today, but his other
offerings, including sandals and flats, are also much-desired for
their classy, modern designs.
On his official website, Tahari notes that he believes that a
woman’s dress should enhance her, “so that her true
beauty can shine through.” His fashion philosophy is
brought to life in the clean, straight lines of his designs.
Elie met and wed his wife, Rory, after his 46th birthday, and
today, she is the vice-chairman of the Elie Tahari company.
She has worked hard with her husband to grow the company
exponentially over the past few years.
Together, Elie and Rory Tahari rule over their growing global
fashion empire while participating in several socially aware groups
and charities, including The Presidential Forum for Renewable
Energy and New Yorkers for Children. In 2002, Elie and Rory
started the Tahari Family Foundation, which supports philanthropic
and cultural causes.
